Too busy this week + Updates

I've been too..too busy this week. Have to work this weekend. I apologize I couldn't read most of your blogs.

I have a few updates for you.

• I've requested my uncle Vadhoolan to judge the Kavidhais. He has wholeheartedly agreed.
• I'll collect all your kavidhai's over the weekend and send them out to my uncle.
• As requested by a few of you I'll also post all the kavidhais as links in one post next week.
• August 7th is International Friendship Day. I thought that would be a good occasion to declare the results.

Thiruvasagam in Symphony - Questions

After buying the CD and listening to it for a couple of weeks now, here are my thoughts:

I like it and it is growing everyday.
On a personal note, I like the last piece in the CD.

Questions:

1) What is the target audience?

I am not sure how many non-Tamils would buy it; forget people of a different nationality. In addition, even there...I am not sure if it would reach the B / C centers.

2) Why Symphony?

Based on the audience above, why did they choose to do it Symphony style. Was it to try something new? I am sure they could have organized it in some other local style.

3) Why Budapest Orchestra?

Why not an orchestra from India. After all, many of Ilayaraja's compositions of this nature has been superb (Example - Sundhari Kannal oru Seithi).

Many of the tunes IMHO are not pure symphony, but kind of a hybrid with many Indian tones/tunes. They could have organized it in India...why go to Budapest?

Bottom-line, what did they achieve by doing this in this scale in this style?

This photograph was taken at SantaClara, California last Saturday. This was after a concert. Sruthi Lakshman troupe performed with Unnikrishnan, Madhumitha,Srilekha Parthasarathy and Sri.Deva.

I was touched by the simplicity and humbleness of Sri.Deva. He mentioned that this was the first time he was visiting USA.

'CHO' advocates 'EMERGENCY'

My favorite 'CHO Ramaswamy' ends his interview at REDIFF like this:

• Today, nobody is aware of his duties in this country
• Laws are there to be broken.
• Rules are there to be violated.
• Regulations are there to be ignored.
• That's the present mood of the country.
• Why is China advancing at a more rapid rate than us? It is the discipline, which is helping them.
• We are the most indisciplined of all democracies in the world.

So, what happened?

I read this letter in the WEEK magazine today. Interesting letter I thought. Wonder what happened? How did India go down from being a developed country to a developing country with a 3rd World status? Is this a correct statement?

I've copied the letter below:

It is an irony that India, which is a developing country today, was one of the most developed ages ago. ‘The wonder that was India’ (June 26) was enlightening. The cover story has achieved the aim of making the study of history interesting. Every Indian would be proud of the country's cultural history. There would have been more monuments around had it not been for the ruthless conquerors of yore. But are the present rulers any different, even though they don’t fight with swords?
