Superstitions about Eclipse

Read this interesting piece on the Solar Eclipse in THE HINDU a few days back.

I don't believe in superstitions. Comeon, we live in 2005 and not 1605 !

Here is an excerpt:

Panicky NRI's

"I got several calls from non-resident Indians, asking about precautions when the eclipse would occur in their country. I told them there was no need of such fears," says the director of the B.M. Birla Science Centre, B.G. Sidharth.

"These beliefs have no scientific backing. In fact, many reasons are actually contradictory," says Y. Ravi Kiron of the Association of Amateur Astronomers.

Venkittu Sir, I read somewhere that all astronauts before boarding the shuttle, would piss on the tyre of the truck that brought them close the the space craft. This was done from 1960s... it has been followed as a superstition..

NV,
I remember when I was a kid, we were asked not to drink even a drop of water till the eclipse was over. But these days people take eclipse also as just another function of nature. Or so I thought till I saw (on the day of the eclipse) one of my colleagues gulping down scalding coffee and steaming vadai which had to disappear before the crucial time, 4.30 which was only seconds away! I didnt want to insult her, still I cudnt help laughing at the poor girl's plight!

As long as man cannot think all these will be there. I was surprised to see the superstition being followed in European countries. I remember once Cho Ramasamy arguing with Veermani in Tele once, that those were told in Old days for those who could not understand. We had tradition of telling something negative to create fear on other's mind and prevent people from doing it.
"Madikku pogathey.... Rendu Kannan Varuvan...." used to scare the children. Everyone has two eyes. What is about that. But to stop the child doing something we said that... and there goes everything. The same way should have been superstition. But all of you tell me... How many of you did not see auspicious time when you left the first time abroad?
