Let's join hands

It's disturbing to see the recent trend in Chennai. It's a shame to read about the newspapers' invasion into privacy. It will only be a matter of time before they come to our bedrooms. So, let's join hands and tell them that we care about privacy.

Please join me and send an email here to DINAMALAR expressing your feelings.

Let's boycott Dinamalar and Tamil Murasu until they apologize. That's the only way we can teach them a lesson. Let's spread the word around.

Pl. help me here. I am unable to understand what we are protesting here. I am able to read only about your appeal for protest against Dinamalar and Tamilmurasu but dont know the reason.Pl. clarify. Thanks.

Sankarkumar, Please read KAPS's blogs in the last few days and you'll know the entire story.

Thanks for bringing this up. I sent the following comments to Dinamalar:
===========
It was unfortunate to see the pictures of people dancing and having fun in a private party. It is so shameful of you to have publicised these events in a respected(??) newspaper of yours. Is Dinamalar the personal custodian of the "Culture" of Tamilnadu? Go and check what your bosses are doing when they are having a party. Can you sneek in and post their photos? You deserve to be sued and I am hoping somebody sue your newspaper for this.

Rags said...

Really disturbing indeed. This is a valid case of intrusion of privacy...If we keep silent, they would go steps further to revoke freedom of expression..

Anonymous said...

Thank you, Venkittu and here is what I had sent:
"Your recent intrusion into the privacy of a group at a hotel party in Chennai is strongly condemned and wish you refrain from such indecent acts in future. 'thamizh kalaachaaram' is not exclusively for women and you were never appointed as the custodians for the same. It is shameful, arrogant and indecent. Pl. apologize immeditely. Thanks."

Cogito said...

Well done venkitu..A better idea is to have an online petition .

adengappa - thank you.

Jo - Thank you

Kaps - Thank you. Actually I was motivated by your post.

SankarKumar - Thank you very much for your email. Let's see what happens.

Ambi - Thank you for your email.

Folks - I am not sure how to start the petition. Kaps pointed me to a few sites but I am not sure if it will reach Dinamalar / Tamil Murasu. So, please advice

Nice idea! Will send the email, but inform if there is a consolidated way of putting it

narayanan sir, i sent this to dinamalar..

dear editor,

recently there is a furore over the article you have published over women partying in hotels. your magazine has also recently published
this:
http://www.dinamalar.com/2005sep28/impfn.asp

if you are so against women's portrayal in society, why then the hypocrisy of printing photos like this to improve your circulation.

look at the comments of the people who come out of the movie theaters during the Sun TV "thirai vimarsanams". They all say "super sir", "padam nalla irundhuchchu".. etc.. for movies which currently portray women along the same lines that you have critiqued. These are regular commonfolk who approve of those portrayals.

while you can always claim that "someone has to start a revolution in terms of how women should behave and how we improve morality in our society", and can even claim that Dinamalar is going to be the guardian , gate keeper for Tamil Morality, it would be a better start if you are 100% sincere.

regards

sundar.

Hi Sundar,
Thank you. I've blogrolled you.
I hope it is ok.

This is what I submitted
-------------------------
What have you accomplished by putting pictures of some women in bars kissing and drinking. Invasion of privacy. Why are you using double standards when it comes to normal people and film stars or politicians. Have you ever published any pictures of men urinating on the roads or near a bus stop? Have you voiced against how women get molested in a PTC bus? Morally you owe an apology to the women concerned, they have not done anything that 70 percent of the men have been doing for ages. Taking pictures of a private act in a private place is Invasion of Privacy. A magazine editor should know it better than anyone else.

For the first time, i logged on to the website of dinamalar and visited the exact news site under controversy now. I think the reporter was either some totally frustrated bloke or someone in his 50's. Totally manipulated information..

*It says the ladies and gents came with 'fashion-designed' dresses.* BS!! I didnt see any extraordinary fashion in it. In our home we have similar and some more stuffs. Visit Westside, Shoppers Stop or Lifestyle and you would get plenty of them..

*It says "in our society where even married couple feel shy to walk holding hands....". ya ya .. Nice society..

*Keeps mentioning public place.. It was a private party, dammit..

An issue out of nothing.. Got a long way to go !!

Would cut and paste this comment right at the site you have given.

HI i sent the following comments to dinamalar,

This comment is about your interest in minimising the obscene things happening in and around tamil nadu. Sir answer me one question. What do you think about your Ad "Sunday na Rendu" is it not obscene, does it not speak about sex? Think about the way in which you market your paper, then tell about others.

Thanks for making it easy for everyone to voice their opinion directlyto dinamalar..Kudos!
The following is what I sent out from my end..
---------------------------
Dear Editor,
Shame on you and Dinamalar!

Your article on "indecent" behavior in a Chennai hotel/pub has shocked most of us in the Tamil community here in the US.
Time and again, Dinamalar has been beating its chest about its role as a guardian of democracy and this one article has trashed all the efforts it has taken/pretended to have done over the years..

No one, I mean No one has the right to violate an individual's right to privacy and its a gross violation committed by your photographers and journos when they gate crashed into the party and snapped pictures of the couples

..Its in a very bad taste that I see your reporting has taken shape and your agendas on women's rights, privacy issues, etc have really taken a step backward by publishing such an article..

How would your reporting community react to some goondas barging into your offices without permission..?? When PMK did that inthe past, didn't you raise a hue and cry about the incident? What your staff have done is nothing different from those thugs..In a way, this action of your reports merits the use of the word "Thugs", including you who authorized the print of it.. the Only difference here is that you are those "white collared" thugs hiding behind a veil of authority flashing your affiliation to a Newspaper..What's next? Your reporters might be barging into someone's bedrooms and start clicking away their personal affairs and you would still authorize this as "quality reporting".. Get a life! Please do take a look at the stuff you print on your newspaper and magazines..Starting with the "Juicy" reporting from Kodambakkam on your Vaaramalar, to the very pin-ups you publish, it is nothing but sorta selling glamour and sex..How cheap can you get when you start dictating the norms of a society while publishing such trash?

At least, in the future, we would like to request your editing/reporting be of ethical quality and meets the standards prescribed by the Reporter's Guild's Code of Ethics.. Shame on you, Dinamalar!

If you would like a discussion on this issue, I would delighted to continue this further in any medium of your choice..

Good one.. past 1 week the media is full of news about *THIS* Stuff. All cheap publicity for DinaMalar and Tamil Murasu ( erstwhile Dinakaran..acquired by Sun TV group- launched couple of weeks ago). These Tabloids wants to increase their circulation, so they will go to any extreme. One more conspiracy may be some big-head will be interested in Tarnishing the hotel name and acquire it for cheap rate. If Dinamalar and other tamil dailies are doing this way Times of India is the biggest "useless" magazine in Bangalore :(.
Lets stop reading these magazine which doesn't make sense at all.

machan, I sent a mail to Dinamalar already claiming that there is a temple in Khajuraho that's showing people doing the "bad word" on stone.

Told them that there is a book called KamaSutra that should be banned immediately cos it contains instructions to the "bad act".

Told them that our temples have semi-clad scupltures of buxom women sexily hugging large pillars.

I've asked them to take photographs and expose this attempt for nearly 1000s of years to destroy Indian and tamizh culture.

No reply though its been a week. Will let everyone know if they reply...

The Rediff Article referred by some folks here smacks of chauvnism. It shows Chennai city as the whole in the badlight. That's not fair.

Just b'cos some morons decided to play the moral police does not mean that Chennai is a bullshit city.

In fact, Shobha Warrier belongs to the class similar to the Dinamalar reporter.

Anonymous said...

Machan, I just posted a stinker to Shobha's article in Rediff.

Her article deserves to be condemned, for the wai it portrays Chennai. Pls join in expressing your displeasure.

I think the culture of transgressing into the private affairs was started by none other than SUN TV in Tamil Nadu, when Karunanidhi arrested J.Jayalalitha (the present chief minister of Tamil Nadu)and sent a band of TV persons to catch the belongings of J.Jayalalitha in her home at Poes garden. It was telecast in SUN TV, with all their sarcastic comments. If you are really interested, you must boycott SUN TV for all its perverted and indecent telecasting of events.
