Thenisai Thenral DevaI seen Mr.Deva during the 70's and early 80's when I used to go to All India Radio Madras. He used to compose music for songs that would be broadcast as 'Mellisai'. He used to walk around with a White Dhoti and kurta with a harmonium in his hands.
Then all of a sudden he came into the Tamil film industry and rocked it with some wonderful hits like 'Baasha', 'Nerukku Ner' to name a few. He has had hundreds of hits including one of my favorites 'Pammal K.Sammandham'.
He has popularized the Madras Gaana Pattu which I think is great. I like it for one reason, it reaches the masses.
As a tribute to Mr.Deva, I've done this small piece today.
Please enjoy and if possible listen to a few of Deva's Gaana songs with an open mind! I am sure you'll enjoy them. Long live Mr.Deva.

You know, deva's composed some good melodies too :D Surprised, checkout 'Oh Swarnamugi' from 'Karuppu Vellai', 'Tajmahal Ondru' from ' 'Kannodu Kanbadhellam', 'Nagumo' in'Arunachalam','Bharathiku Kannamma' from 'Priyamudan' are some of the notable one I remember.
There are a few more, to the extent of compiling a 70 minute Audio CD out of it without a single gaana from Deva.
If I remember right, Deva's first movie was sometime in the mid-80s itself, he became popular in the 90s though.

My favorite gana song is Kavalai Padathai Sahothara from Kadhal kotai and Kotaval chavadi lady form Kanathira thonrinal.

i am not a gr8 fan of deva, super a copy adipar (to the very english songs i listen to), annal enakku gaana paatu pidikum,
Venkitu sir, i remember one interview by Deva Sir about his music in "aasai". I guess it is one of his best.He was saying that Sivaji was so thrilled after listening to "pulveli pulveli" (one of my fav too) that he gave him a gold chain for that song!
whatever said and done about his copying and all (which i would say is totally wrong , coz some of his tunes are indianized version of some english songs , but his Gaanas are just too great) nobody, lemme repeat nobody can ever give absly majestic entry song for RAJINI other than Deva sir.He nails it every time he tunes entry songs for RAJINI!

more than anything he is a very nice human being. he charges his rate based on the paying capacity / ability of the producer. He was sitting in a adjacent table in Annalakshmi restaurant in Singapore. He was really simple....I didn't bother to disturb him.

Deva did "khushi" na?
thulasi, Kushi was a major copy (probably would come second after Ullathai Allitha). 'Unnai Arindhal', MJ's 'Dangerous', 'Primal Fear' soundtrack are immediate lifts you can identify.
I second venkitu sir and third IBH on the success of Rajini-Deva combo. Annamalai, Basha ellam enna hit!!
