========================================================

I am not sure if any of the State Governments or the Central Government of India is thinking about a Memorial for the Tsunami victims.

I feel that it would be a noble gesture to build a Memorial for the departed souls.

Yes, Venkittu Sir. We need to let something to inform the future, that there was a devastating Tsunami that took thousands of lives.

But most important, prior to any memorial, is the installation of the tSunami warning system. We need to fund it, and implement that first.

sir memorial ellam secondry, primary need is rehablitation and tsunami warning sysetem!
i actually dont see the need for a memorial!

I agree with Keerthi and Vatsan: I think more than a memorial for the departed, we need a Warning system for Tsunamis. Else, the Indian coast line would have only memorials.

Sorry to sound harsh.

Ramar = MG Ramachandran?

Isn't there a blanket ban effected by SC on memorials in public places?

The rehabilitation is not done completely yet, and there is no money shortage. I would like to draw your attention in to this: The Tsunami Festival

Do we really need another memorial in Chennai, I am not sure. But as someone else said above, come election time the memorial will arrive.

Naani, good thots, but like a few others have xpressed, the rehab is more of a priority.

The disaster was just not limited to India alone, so a memorial if built should be multi-national..

Sir,

thats a good thought. But, there are lots of other to-do's like the rahab, tsunami alert system, good evacuation system in public places, compulsory fire exits in buildings and many more. IMO, if we have a memorial, it will become yet another 'hot' spot (jus visit Gandhi Mandapam/Valluvar Kottam on a weekday and you know what am talking abt).

Right thought. Man had lot of victories against natural disasters since his evolution. Tsunami would also be defeated in future(even now there is a project to construct protective walls along sea shore). Certainly a memorial structure has to be erected for the Tsunami victims.

It is a good idea. We're all still Tsunami and 9/11 crazy now but what about in the future. Lessons should be learnt from and never forgotten so they don't occur again. More than a memorial, a place which doctorates the event would be a better idea.

I would rather that the government creates a Tsunami Memorial Fund rather than a memorial. All the money that goes into maintaining a memorial could be put to better use. JMHO.
