Successful Desis - Kal Raman

There might be some person(s) in your life you'll be proud to have known. I am proud to say that I had the opportunity to know Kal Raman ( Kalyana Raman) while I was a contractor for Wal-Mart, at Bentonville, Arkansas during the years 1995-96.

Here is Kal's Profile:

Currently
  • Senior VP of Worldwide Hardlines Retail at Amazon.com.

Before that

  • CEO - Drugstore.com
  • CIO - NationsRent
  • Senior Director - Information Systems - BlockBuster Inc.
  • Director - International Systems - Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
  • Contractor - Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
  • Position Unknown - TCS, India.

Graduated From - Anna University, Guindy, Madras, India. Bachelor's degree in Engineering

Native of - Tamilnadu, Tirunelveli.

Age - I guess must be in the late 40's.

Though I didn't report to Kal, I used to hear that he was a hardworking/ruthless Boss, who'll somehow manage to get the work done on time.

I know Kal as a hard working, god fearing person who lived a very simple life. Had a beautiful wife and 1 daughter then.

Kal was very interested in playing cricket. We used to play tennis ball cricket every day in a baseball field at Rogers, Arkansas, a small town close to Wal-Mart Headquarters.

I remember the matches we used to play with the University of Arkansas Desi team. I also remember a match, where we were literally at war, with the stumps and bats in our hands arguing an umpiring decision.

Kal was also a big fan of tamil film songs. I remember listening to the songs of the Rajini film 'Basha' on our way to cricket matches in his SUV.

One day, while I was at his home for dinner with my family and my mother, I remember Kal calling his mother (at Tirunelveli) on the phone and asking about my stars and fortune when I mentioned about my health problems. Yeah, Kal believed in ( not sure now) Astrology as well.!
  • I am happy to have known Kal Raman and his family.
  • His hard and dedicated work has taken him to such heights.
  • I wish I could do that.!

His face looks familiar but I am not able to place him (among my known list). Of course, I have been inspired by a lot of people in my life but I also came to realize that one can never be like somebosy. Each of us came with our own paths carved out and will take that path on our eternal journey. Some paths may intersect but even they will branch out after a while. Like in the "footprints of time" story, there will always be the impression of two feet in that path - either it would be ours or when we feel we cannot go on, it will be the two feet of the divinity that carries us during those trying times.

Impressive indeed.

Abt a year back, I got in touch with my relative after really long time.. As I didn't know what he was doing that time, I casually asked abt that. He said that he is with a really huge & popular MNC in Bangalore. I totally forgot abt him. I hav this habit of seeing the profiles of senior mgmt whenever I visit a company's website. Few mths back, when I checked up that MNC's website, I was shocked to find him as the CEO of that MNC's Indian division. :)

Jagan - Yeah Kal was a simple guy and a great cricket fan.

Venkat - True isn't it...Life.!!

G-Vampire - Sure..I look forward to.

Thennavan - Your thoughts are right. I think some people can inspire. Kal to me is like that.

Chakra - Interesting. Another humble guy I think. He didn't trumpet.!

Dear venkat:I am not shocked like chakkara but happy since the adage is"ask"- "Will be given'
"Tap"- "will be open"
Ur friend KalyanaRaman u have admitted believes in Astro whch means divinity which means the ;Supreme Power" over our
powers.
I know U are not against God but on quest or search of a tangible explanation gor many of our customs and rituals. All U have to do is to find out and approach learned men of India who are experts or go to religious and philosophical web sites and try to know the purport, message or meaning
All the best. pk
