Living in Old Glory ?

What are some of the things we as people from India are/can be proud about ?

Here are mine:

Giving the world "The Number zero" ( there is a debate about who gave this - Not sure)
AryaBhatta, Varahamihra etc. etc. ( Do today's youth know who these people are?)
    Indus Valley civilization
Our great kings (dynasties) and all their contributions
    Taj Mahal
    The Mahatma
    Hinduism (Bhagavad Gita)
    Gauthama Buddha
    The Kama Sutra

Anything in the present we can be proud about ? I have a few:

    Indian Postal system
    Indian Railways

How about what we need not be proud about?

    Our ever growing population
    Lack of Infrastructure
    Illiteracy
    Corruption
    Pollution
    Superstitions
    Communal clashes
    Our caste system
    Poverty

In my humble opinion ( correct me if I am wrong ) Its high time we stopped living in old glory and live in the Present and look forward to a good future.

Anna, As I agree with you for certain things.. you also need to agree one more thing
* India is the best country to offshore the s/w related technologies.
* India is self sustaining in satelite related technologies.
* Indian govt hospitals are much more better than any other govt provided facilities.
* India also getting lots of offshore for medical esp. for heat surgery...
I can write many.. but I'll end here..

We need to know our short comings.. if you give some suggestion how to overcome the listed thing it would be beneficial to the readers...

There is a wonderful quote (author unknown though!)
Qu: Don't let your past dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you become. uQu

It is high time, we as a nation adopted that...

Daph / Uday,
Thanks for your comments.

Kanga Thambi,
Outsourcing, Heart surgery Ok, I can agree to some extent.

Govt Hospitals? do you think so? Can someone get treated there without recommendations? Bribes?

Satellites - Can you tell me how it is impacting? I mean what are the benefits?

Suggestions from my end? Its for another day I guess, I'll certainly write my views soon.
Thanks for stopping by thambi.

I shall just point everyone to a remarkably true scene in Swades when the villages talk about India having the best culture and tradition and the west not having the same and SRKs response.
We tend to wallow in long lost glory that we never bother to think about how we can expand our horizons and use those lessons in culture to make inroads into new society. Else, we will continue to have the same old culture and tradition that refuses to adopt new practices while the rest of the world rushes past us.
