Ilayaraja's - Reethi Gowla

One of the Tamil film hits in recent times is a song 'Sudum Nilavu' from the tamil film "Thambi". The singer is Unni Krishnan and the Music Director is Vidhya Saagar. The song is set to Raaga - Reethi GowLa.

Today I accidentally found
Sujan's post on Reethi GowLa and learnt about this Masterpiece by Maestro Ilayaraja.

When I listened to it I got goosebumps. You'll notice how nicely IR has done it with some superb singing by Hariharan and Mahalakshmi Iyer.

Enjoy the song

'Meettaatha' is definitely a beautiful song.
Somehow I get reminded of the song 'Mugilinamay Kaeladi' sung by Sujatha for the movie 'Amirtham' (MD:Bhavatharini) whenever i listen to 'Sudum Nilavu' of 'Thambi'.

meetadha is a one of my favourites. Sudum Nilavu didn't impress me initially, but took a liking to it after repeated hearing. Actually Sudum Nilavu, is almost similar to Azhagana Ratchasiye from Mudhalvan.

Meetadha veenai is one of those classic gems that went unrecognized becoz it happened to be in a bad film called Poonthattam

there many such IR gems remains hidden in bad films.

Thalayai kuniyum Thamaraye from the movie Oru odai nadhiyagiradhu is also a composition in Reethi gowlai. Sudum Nilavu, though it resembles Azhagana Ratshasiye, Vidyasagar has tried his best in that song with my favourite singer Unni & Harini...

The real masterpiece in reethigowla by Maestro is "Chinna kannan azhaikkiraan" from Kavikkuyil, sung by none other than Dr BMK. This song leaves the others far behind.

I dont know much about ragaas..last night I was at a temple when they were closing for the day & I heard this tune played by the temple musician (in naadhaswaram) , I lost my soul.. and went over to ask him what raaga it is, he mentioned "reethi gowlai" .. I am going to stock up on songs & instrumentals in this wonderful raaga. any leads will be much appreciated.. thanks for the blog & wonderful comments. god bless you all.

Realised wif great pleasure that few of my favs like "Chinna Kannan" and the recent "Kangal Irandal" are also from Reethi Gowlai.

Talking about hidden gems/not so popular ones:
I have my own small list of 'em:
1. IR's "Karattoram Moongil Kaadu" from the film magudi.
2. "Rasigane, rasikka vaa".. dunno which movie

thanks for posting the unrecognised classical gem of IR. There are many good songs of IR which never get catchy because of the bad film. Rithi Gawla Raaga, i also love it
