Here is a list of Tamil Literature that we have virtually forgotten.

I am not sure if they show up in School Tamil text books these days.!

Aganaanooru, Puranaanooru, Tholkappiyam, Seevakasindhaamani, manonmaniyam, seerappuraanam, silappadhikaaram, pathup pattu, ettuth thogai, pathinenkeezh kanakku, periya puraanam, naan manik kadigai, inna naarppadhu, iniyavai naarppadhu, thiru kadugam, aachaarak kovai, siru pancha moolam, aelaadhi..etc..etc.!

I've read pieces of these during my school days, have you? and what about today?

TT_Giant - I completed my SSLC in 1977. I think my batch was the last before they went to 10+2 system. I had all these during my 6th-11th std. I took French in my PUC as Tamil was hard in PUC those days.

Glad to know that until 1997 we had these in schools.

Grey-Vampire - I feel honored by your post today. Thank you.

About TAmil MHO is this: They should make it a bit easy and interesting for kids to learn it. Give them some incentives. That will atleast force some people to not drop it abruptly.

Learning a foreign language or other Indian languages to score marks is ok, but I feel Tamil should be atleast made attractive to learn. Anyways my 2 cents.

IOIIO - The Govt should find a good way to bring back tamil in schools and colleges without forcing kids to learn it. That's my feeling.

sir the problem with tamil literature is the dravidian parties, left to itself it wud have been very popular today, but the dravidian parties stuffed it down ppls throat, therefore they developed an aversion to it, which leads to the sorry state of affairs.

many of kaviniar kanadasan's lyrics are said to be inspired by silapadikaram according to my mother.
what i study hneed nt be my passion. i can be an economist and still be passionate about tamil literature and study it. formal education is not the only method to study something.

Eventhough, so many topics were not covered in my text books (or have I forgotten some??), I remember studying few...

But, honestly speaking, at that time I didn't know the importance of each & every epic. The way it was taught, was just to score marks academically. Now, if I hv good time, I may spend a lot on several topics listed here...

@SRIVATSAN

exactly! I studied sanskrit and was a state rank holder in it when all I know right now in sanskrit is Ramaha Ramov ramaaha..

On the other hand I got screwed in tamil in tenth.. but its still my passion..

But the problem is our system throws unneccessary restrictions and sometimes not introduces so transparent repurcussiobs to stop me from pursuing what I want to..

There lies the problem!

shud have read as "introduces not so transparent repurcusiions"

Nowadays panchathantra kathaikal , inna 40-iniyavai 40 ,thirukural and many more Tamil Ilakiyams are available in CD animation formats and they can be played for kids of present generation..I've infact picked lots of them for my cousins here..Will write more later !!

It seems like the HSC students opt for French or Sanskrit over Tamil to score more in the board exams...

I studied in 'Tamil Medium' and remember studying some snippets of the Tamil Literatures mentioned in your post..

But these days lot of kids (from 'middle class') study in 'English Medium' and miss out on all these things.

let us not forget one important factor in the proliferation of tamil as an art -- television.

In the past, kamban vizha used to be widely covered by doordarshan...and then patti mandrams used to be full of literature based themes -- "was lord rama correct in killing vaali an animal from behind a tree?", "who was great - karnan or kumbakarnan", "who was great - seethai or kannaki" etc.. And then, as much as people criticized "yennum ezhuthum", Nannan made an huge impact on tamizh and the way it was taught...

today, how much of this do you see? patti mandapams have been so liquefied with standard members and standard judges....social themes dominate that literature is forgotten....these things have wide repercussions...not only do people dont know tamil, having not read appar, sambandar, manikkavasagar etc., they would not know about siva puranam as well....same with not reading azhwar's and understanding vaishnavism....

I am sure, there are still some colleges in which you can get a glimpse of the "glory of tamil literature"....in those people tamil will live..

Folks,
Thanks for all your comments.

Blame in on the Dravidan parties, people's attitude whatever.

I wish our Govt. grants some special priveleges for people who take up their mother tongue in schools /colleges. And maybe make the syllabus easier.!
